My story is about making a difference in the world. I couldn’t encourage you, my readers, to get involved without offering you some ideas of where to begin. So much good work is being done everywhere but I couldn’t include every possible resource so what you will see here are highlights of some of the many organization doing “the good work.”
Whatever your experience with social activism or your personal interests, the organizations and resources listed here can give you a place to get started.
My goal is to include groups and organizations that, not only ask for financial donations but, give you a place to volunteer in your local community, or to take action online through social media. There are also links to tools and sites that enable you to be a more informed citizen. I’ve categorized these resources so you can easily find the area that fits your lifestyle and your passion.
The challenges we face today seem overwhelming. They can make you think that nothing you do will make any difference. I believe that with everyone doing what they can, no matter how small, it will add up to make a huge difference. It’s not just what I believe; it’s what I have experienced.
Start small. It can be as simple as talking to your neighbors. Finding the right fit for you, and pacing yourself, are keys to being a happy, effective and fulfilled activist. There are many different ways to help: from donating your hard earned money to a cause you believe in, to becoming a mentor to a young person, to registering people to vote, to attending a rally, to making food for volunteers, to calling on your local school board to pass a climate resolution, to gathering gently used toys and giving them to children who are less fortunate as I did.
An informed and engaged population is essential for a strong and viable democracy. It matters that you are involved, because today our country and the world needs you more than ever.
We have seen the good that can happen when people come together to fight hate and divisiveness, help out their neighbors in need and stand up for what is right and just.
As Hillary Rodham Clinton said, “Please, never stop believing that fighting for what’s right is worth it. It is always worth it.”
